The term Outsiders refers to an autonomous group founded by Marcus Fayel on Leir II (Mya). The group's self-designation is unknown. They are known for their strict isolationism. Outsiders believe that people from other planets could "infect" their "pure society," though over the years this rhetoric has lessened.[1]

History

In 2743, Galor Messer IX authorized the auctioning of a terraforming permit for Leir II. The venture Hatfield & Harding (colloquially known as H&H) won the bid. Dr Marcus Fayel, a terraforming expert at UPARQ was entrusted with the management of the project. Fayel established the first terraforming colony on a rich mineral vein, funneling the profits to himself and a cadre of associates.

H&H demanded a rigorous lifestyle regime of the colonists, with a daily routine of running, weight lifting and yoga while under constant surveillance. Numerous areas of the facilities were off-limits to those without valid security clearance under penalty of detainment.

For unknown reasons, around 2803 Fayel began to exhibit erratic behavior. He openly espoused a belief which distinguished between "pure" and "impure" people while framing himself as a messianic creator. In 2812 he took control of the entire colony and cut off communications to the outside world. In his last comm, he declared that the "purification" was accomplished, and his "pure" followers must be separated from the rest of the society.

The executives at Hatfield & Harding were furious and alarmed by this turn of events- not the least because it represented a direct threat to the company's profits. They swiftly hired a group of mercenaries to retake control of the planet. The company believed that the workers would turn on Fayel once help arrived. However, when the mercenaries landed on the planet they were ambushed by the very workers they had intended to liberate. Having separated the mercenaries from their ships in this ambush, the workers were also able to capture the entire merc flotilla intact. It appears that these ships went on to form the core of a small fleet that still patrols the space near Leir II to this day.[2]

Motives

"(...) I mean, we've come to realize that our lives have been an illusion. Been told that there are things in life that we need. Money. Fame. Love. Ships. Penthouses in Prime. They're all distractions. Objects to hide who we really are, luring us away from looking at ourselves and realizing that true understanding of the self is all we truly need in this universe.

Dr. Fayel has shown us that. (...) He sees things on a level that… (...) I've come to learn, Louisa, that I've been infected with the haze that blinds us all to the truth of life.

I must turn myself inward to truly understand and part of that means that I will not come home to you. (...) I know that my attachment to you is holding me back from my true potential. Give my love to the children and maybe I will see you all when I am free. (...) you should all join me here. I can show you so many things."
Final message of Tesko Corbin, engineer [3]

There are conflicting theories that Fayel had deliberately manipulated and brainwashed the workers, or that he had just convinced them to stand by him for his grand experiment. Others have pointed out the possibility of mass psychosis as a result of the extremely stressful environment. No workers had requested to leave the planet in the project's final five years, but it is unknown if dissenters were imprisoned or killed.[4]

Trivia

  • Usuni Colo traveled to Mya in 2941 to see 'how isolationism had affected the planet and its people' and was expelled after trying to leave the zone only reserved for travelers. On his way home to Elysium, Colo discovered the jump point to Kabal.[5]

In Media

A 2949 update to 星际陆战队 included the map The Good Doctor - a recreation of Fayel's colony facility at the time of the mercenary raid in 2812.
